Nancy Drew Stay Tuned for Danger Deluxe

Amazon.com Review

Nancy Drew has always been a great heroine, but she seemed kind of, well... stuffy. No more: Nancy gets down to the dirty work of crime solving in the excellent and engaging Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned for Danger. As you might imagine, we see a lot of software, but Danger captivated us, holding us long enough to postpone other reviews while we searched for more clues!

In the game, Nancy's job is to investigate death threats coming to Rick Arlen, a hunky TV soap star. The plot is straightforward enough, and here's what the software really does well: ambiance. The first-person perspective puts you in the center of the crime scenes, and the inventive game design lets you pick up objects for investigation and keep notes on things you've found.

Occasionally, you come across another person, and it can often be surprising. In the style of Choose Your Own Adventure books, you're given various questions to ask, and what you choose alters the outcome of what you learn. The people seem a little stiff in conversation (and, to be honest, in the graphics), but in a strange way, it helps increase the creepiness factor--an uptight verbal response makes sense, considering they're being interviewed about a serious crime.

There's a real rush that comes from finding key elements and extracting just the right piece of information from an unwitting witness. Nancy Drew, first created as a female version of the Hardy Boys in 1929, has weathered fashion and tastes well through the work of HerInteractive. For girls too old for "kids' stuff" but who still want a game that's all theirs, Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned for Danger can help fulfill a teen or preteen's need for adventure. --Jennifer Buckendorff

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Knew? I'm Hooked on Nancy Drew!, December 10, 1999

I realize that the software geniuses at HerInteractive originally created the Nancy Drew mystery games for girls...but, uh...even though I'm over 30, I just can't help myself! Stay Tuned for Danger is completely amazing! It's such a thrill to pretend you're Nancy Drew and try to think like a master detective. There's endless puzzles to solve and clues to look for. But watch out for mind-boggling twists, turns and surprises--they'll keep you occupied for hours! You truly have to see the dynamite 3D graphics to believe it! Each room you enter is designed and decorated with exquisite detail. You'll also love the music and captivating dialogue between the characters. Beware of only one thing: you may get hooked! Everyone will LOVE this game! (I'm trying to tear my husband away from it as we speak...he's been playing the game now for 8 straight hours!)

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome game, December 1, 1999
    By A Customer
This computer game has a such a wonderful environment to explore! I wish there was more of it! The 3-D animated characters are a nice improvement over the 2-D animation in "Secrets Can Kill". The puzzles are fun, and the game play is addictive. This game is a little bit tougher than the last game...you really have to hunt for those clues. "Stay Tuned" is perfect for anyone who loves a good mystery. It's a refreshing alternative to the blood, gore and evil in the popular software games today. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleuthing isn't easy, but it sure is fun!, January 24, 2001

This is the second game in the Nancy Drew software series that I've tried (I've also played "Message In a Haunted Mansion"), and this was by far the more difficult of the two. In this game, Nancy is staying with a soap star, Mattie, whose on-screen co-star, Rick, has been receiving death threats. It's up to Nancy to find out who is behind them. The game requires not only patience but a smart mind; you have to remember things and write down clues, solve puzzles, and plan things accordingly. Although I enjoyed playing it, it was frustrating at times, and one time, I spent several hours thinking I was stuck, because I had not noticed the arrival of an important new object. (Boy did I feel silly when I finally noticed it!) This game will take you many hours to complete. For fans of the older Nancy Drew books, there's an added bonus -- the games feature objects from the books (look for the clock from "The Secret of the Old Clock", with the crescent on the top!)...
