The cover art was Rudi Nappi's best or 2nd best in my opinion, perhaps only surpassed by the 1962 revision of The Secret of The Old Mill. The dark clouds, the ghost, the fort, and the brothers make this one of my favorite cover arts in the original series. The story however - yes - does not live up to the beautiful cover. Still I find this book gets a bum rap for that very thing. It is like the cover cursed the book. There is a rather good subplot dealing with Chet & artwork. The volume is rather violent in nature or one might say dangerous. Knocked out - locked in a sinking drum in the middle of a lake, a sea monster - this volume is packed with action. The criminals are not revealed until the end - a feature I liked. The manner of their capture was well written. The main plot though was a little on the "dumb" side. All & all, I felt it was a pretty good addition to the series. This book follows "The Mystery of the Aztec Warrior." The next book in the series is "The Mystery of the Spiral Bridge."The Hardy Boys travel to the Millwood Art School to solve the theft of two paintings from the Prisoner-Painter collection of millionaire Jefferson Davenport. The paintings are of nearby Fort Senandaga, where the Prisoner-Painter was held for some time. Crumbling fort Senandaga is the source of several mysteries. A historical mystery is the source of contention between two of the characters in this story. There is also the mystery of a valuable chain of gold created by a commander of the fort. Is the chain a myth, or is it real? If it was real, does it remain hidden near the fort? There seem to be those who believe that the chain is real, for someone continues to steal Prisoner-Painter paintings and their frames, attacking those that stand in their way. During their...
